I love watching Alton Brown do his thing on his show Good Eats. It’s amazing how he takes things that would otherwise be uninteresting to most people and makes them exciting. It is a testimony to his work that ALL of my children love the show.
My children vary in ages between 11 and 4 and they all sit down to watch Alton even when he’s talking about how to properly handle and prepare avocados. They will watch him as he prepares many, many things they would never even consider eating. (He once made avocado ice cream.) Occasionally, they even will want to try some of the things he makes. (I’ve noticed that my 11 year old is more “food adventurous” because of the show.)
I once heard Alton Brown say that one of the original ideas behind the show was really more of a rant. He wondered why cooking shows were so boring. He didn’t feel that they needed to be boring at all. He’s obviously passionate about cooking , food and food history. It shows in everything he does. Even when he’s communicating things I don’t care about at all I still get caught up in his passion and creativity.
I feel that my job as a pastor is similar to that of Alton Brown. I just don’t believe God is boring. I can’t accept that idea at all. To me, God, as He is revealed in the Bible, is the most exciting, creative, non-boring thing in the universe. If God, or His message, come across as boring, something simply must be wrong with the messenger. I firmly believe the author of the message and the message itself is nothing short of electrifying.
It seems the church of the last two hundred years has done something never before accomplished. We’ve made God a bore. It’s time to change that.
