Humor as a Tool
Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.’ And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying. – Ronald Reagan
Humor is a powerful tool. A lot of people don’t understand that. They don’t realize that humor can be used in serious ways to get real jobs done. One of the reasons I admire Ronald Reagan so much is that he understood how to use humor. I like the quote above. I also like his famous line during the debate with Walter Mondale. The big news story was Reagan’s age. There were questions as to whether or not he was too old to be president. During the debate he said…
I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.
The comment brought the house down and Mondale later said that he knew he had lost the campaign the moment Reagan uttered that line.
