Heartbreaking News

I’ve been heartbroken since Friday morning.  That’s when I got the bad news about my dear friend, Gary Lamb.  He shared this devastating news yesterday on his blog.  I must tell you that I’m still having a hard time getting my head around all of it.  It’s still very fresh and it’s hard to put into words everything I’m thinking at this point but I do want to share a few early thoughts.

First and foremost, my heart goes out to Deanna and the kids.  As Gary has said, they are the real victims here.  I have literally cried for this family and what they are now going through.  I’m going to be praying like crazy for them and I’d like to ask you to do the same.

Second, my heart goes out to the staff and the people of Revolution Church.  Again, I’ve been grieving for these folks for days now.  They have suffered a huge blow and it’s going to take some time for them to work through everything.  I pray that they will look to Jesus and focus on Him alone.  I must say, however, even in the midst of all this that I am confident that the Lord will see them through this and show His great strength as they walk through it with Him.  There is still a bright future for Revolution!

Third, my heart goes out to Gary.  I love that man like a brother.  He made some bad decisions and he fell into sin.  Now, he’s dealing with the consequences of those decisions.  I know that it’s going to be a long process but I also know that God is a redeeming and restoring God.

Now, let me quickly add that some will be tempted to vilify Gary and try to somehow diminish the work God has done through him at Revolution. That would be a big mistake. To be sure, there are certainly lessons to be learned from all this and I’m not trying to defend Gary’s sin but the truth is that God used Gary in big ways to change many, many lives. We would be wise to celebrate what God has done while, at the same time, grieving that which has been lost.

Beyond all that, I want to say publicly that I am completely committed to doing whatever I can to help Gary, Deanna, and Revolution.  Now is the time for all of us that know and love these guys to step up.  We must commit to pray for them and be there for them throughout this entire process.

I want to stress again that God is a redeeming and restoring God. While this news was a shock to us, it wasn’t a shock to Him and I know that He always has a plan. He’s got a plan for Revolution Church. He’s got a plan for Deanna and the kids. And, He’s got a plan for Gary too.

I am reminded of these verses…

I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us. Romans 8:38-39 (Msg)

Gary’s fortunate to have a friend like you. You made a very important point…Gary’s worth to the Kingdom has been significant. Many unchurched and dechurched people have connected with God through Gary.

I’m praying for him, Deanna, and his kids. Like Gary said in his blog, it is the Lord Jesus who built Revolution and He will see them through this difficult time.

    Tony,

I feel exactly the same emotions as you, and affirm everything you have just said. Deanna and the kids have got to be confused and scared – the Revolution family is shocked and disappointed, and Gary must be exhausted and broken. As fellow Pastors we must do EVERYTHING possible to imitate the love of Christ as modeled for us in John 8. Count me in as a prayer warrior and in any other way I can serve them.

I hope we can all remember and pray for the family of the assistant, who are just as much victims as Deanna and the kids.

Sins grasp is far reaching and this is a VERY sober reminder 4 all of us to be on our guard.

Tony, I’m glad someone with as big a heart as yours lives in that area and knows Gary so well.

Thanks for displaying the love of Christ through you comments above! This is just one of several posts I’ve read about Gary over the weekend….I hesitate to type this but here goes….NO ONE has mentioned the redemption of the “other women” I hesitate to label her in the fashion…but let’s not forget her…..for her heart is broken and she also needs the redemptive love and support of others @ this time!

I have been a memeber of Revolution for 3 years. You can not imagine what kind of pain Revolution is going through. Gary has brought so many people to Jesus. My husband for one never went to church until we found Revolution. Because of Gary, he began his walk with Jesus. Yes, I am concern what this will do to so many people. Our church has always been about forgiving. Our church had begun to grow rapidly because of Gary and I am convinced that the devil was not very happy with this. No one should ever forget the good Gary has done. I appreciate all the kind words and prayers. Gary and his family need all the prayers we can send their way. Gary’s purpose in life was to be a pastor. With Gods help Revolution will continue strong. Gary tought us that we must all forgive and that only Jesus himself walked this earth as a perfect man.

I echo everyone’s sentiments. However, I’ve got to ask this… Where will you all be a year from now? Two years? Etc…?

What if Gary’s response to the situation doesn’t exactly mesh with your expectations? What will you do then?

Your comment seems to imply that people are obligated to stay in relationship with people no matter what choices they make. I think we’re obligated to love and extend grace, but we’re fooling ourselves to think that one another’s choices shouldn’t affect how we all relate to one another, at least those in the kingdom. We’re simply unable to silo our relationships separately from our behavior. In fact, relationships that do exist like that are really not relationships at all.

Please know that I’m not relating this specifically to Gary or anyone else. I only met him once and am surely not qualified to make any assumptions about how he may or may not walk this out. I’m of the school of believing the best until proven otherwise, and even then just shutting up about it. :-) But I’m not in the school that says ‘let’s all ignore and enable’ if a dear friend makes bad choices.

Randy, I guess I don’t see Tony saying that. When you’ve really, really, really screwed up, there is no shortage of people who will turn their backs on you.

I think it IS our calling to be a steadfast friend if it’s possible; to be that person who can give wise counsel, or just remind the person who’s done this that they are still lovable by God and people, and they haven’t forfeited everything if they repent and are willing to follow God.

There’s just a big difference to me between rejecting sin–which I advocate!–and rejecting the person because they’ve sinned. Know what I mean?
