Amy and I had the great pleasure of visiting Elevation Church this past weekend. What an amazing church! We had such a great time seeing everything there.
Chunks Corbett, the executive pastor, was kind enough to spend the entire morning with us. He answered every question I could come up with an then some. You simply couldn’t have asked for a better host. I was very impressed with Chunks and I’m sure he’s a big part of the reason God is growing Elevation Church. I was about ready to offer Chunks a job but I think he knows Elevation is a very special place.
I believe the real story behind Elevation’s phenomenal growth, in their short 18 month history, is their volunteers. Truthfully, I just couldn’t get over the amount of energy and effort these folks put into setting up (and tearing down) each week. They meet in a high school where they have three services on Sundays (8:30, 10, & 11:30). They run around 1700 people through the doors at that campus alone. The volunteers are some hard working folks and it shows. (For those interested, Tadd has a lot of great Elevation pictures here.)
The pastor, Steven Furtick, was sick as a dog that morning but he pushed through and did a great job. I reminded me of the playing hurt posts I’ve been seeing on a lot of the blogs lately.
I don’t get to do it very often but I always learn so very much from visiting other churches. I also seem to always walk away with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for what God is doing back home at Mill Creek!
Cool…it’s great that your thoughts and expectations were met.
I hate when there’s that feeling that something great is going on and when you see it, it’s nothing but fluff and disappointment.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your visit to Elevation. I enjoyed reading them.
