Scriptural Defense

I feel that I need to speak out about a growing debate in the church.  Of course, I’m talking about bags vs backpacks.  Some misguided folks believe that men shouldn’t have messenger bags.  They feel that backpacks are better.  But, what does scripture say?  Frankly, I’m not interested in your opinions.  We must go to the scriptures.

Interestingly, there are no references to backpacks at all in the Bible.  Yet, Jesus himself told the disciples the following…

Jesus told them, "But now, if you have a moneybag, take it with you. Also take a traveling bag.”  Luke 22:36a (CEV)

So we know that the 12 disciples carried bags and that none of them had backpacks.  That’s pretty strong to me.

Now, obviously, I’m not saying that we should do away with backpacks.  I think they have their place.  Children perhaps should be allowed to use them.  However, once children become adults they should have to lose the backpacks.  As Paul said…

When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child does. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. 1 Cor. 13:11 (NLT)

So, if you own one, I humbly submit that all you guys should put away your Spiderman (or Spongebob) backpacks and join the rest of the true disciples.

:)

  1. Typical method of those less serious Bible students like Rick Warren who use whatever paraphrase supports their point. The proper translation is:
Luke 22:36 English Standard Version (ESV)

He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack.
Here is the definition of knapsack:
A pack carried on soldiers back, holding clothes and personal items
Your fashionable shoulder bag is not a knapsack; please be honest and admit that it is simply a man purse!
