My Portion

When God was dividing up the promised land, all the tribes got some form of real estate except for the Levites.  They were the ministers and God told them that HE was their portion.

I wonder how that news hit them originally.  Part of me thinks that perhaps a group of them were disappointed to hear that news.  Another part of me likes to think that they understood what an amazing promise and gift that was from the moment they heard it and they were inwardly happy.

I must admit that I haven’t always completely understood or appreciated the fact that God is my portion.  The other day, however, I started thinking about the those that have explored new territories.  How exciting it must have been to come across the mighty Mississippi or the Grand Canyon for the first time.  Imagine discovering one natural wonder after another.  Think about how it would feel to discover some natural resource that’s just sitting right there waiting for you.  Now, think about the fact that God says that HE is your portion.  HE is your lot in life.  HE is your provision.

The truth is that He has more than enough of whatever you need.  He’s got more peace than you’ll ever need.  He’s got more power than you’ll ever need.  He’s got more hope than you’ll ever need.  He is truly a rich territory filled with everything you’ll ever need to make it through your journey.  The Psalmist said…

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.  Psalm 73:26 (NIV)

David says that God is the strength in his heart and his portion.  He says that even though he may fail, his God won’t.  David understood how to dig deep into his portion and find the resources he needed to make it through the tough times of his life.

God wants each of us to not only appreciate the fact that He’s our portion.  He wants us to go deeper than that.  He wants us to be explorers.  He wants us to chart the rich uncharted territories in our portion, to discover the resources available to us, to build settlements and mines and mills and farms.  He wants us to use all that we need because He’s got more than enough.

Let’s get busy exploring more than just the corner of God that we know now.  Let’s drive in deeper and see ALL that He has in store for us.
