As I have mentioned here in the past, I have a like/hate relationship with facebook. I currently have an active account there but you never know how long it’s going to last. :) Anyway, one thing that has bugged me on Facebook has been the ads on the side of the page which typically feature weird shots of young women or the six-pack abs of some dude. Thankfully, Facebook added the ability to rate the ads in order to give folks a little control but the thing that I’ve found that works best is to simply stop the images from loading.
I’m sure you could do this in IE too but here’s how I did it in Firefox.
- Goto Tools>>Options.
- Select the Content tab.
- Select the Exceptions… button beside the “Load Images Automatically” check box.
- Enter creative.ak.facebook.com and hit the Block button.
- Close everything and you’re all set.
The text of the ads still appear but the photos don’t. Enjoy.
Adblock Plus (ADP) for Firefox will handle all of it: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
Ad blocking in IE can be done via IEPro: http://www.ie7pro.com/ Should work on IE8 as well but I haven’t tried it since I’m usually on FF for non-Windows machines and Chrome on Windows.
