I sat down with my entire family a couple of nights ago to watch God Grew Tired of Us. It’s a wonderful documentary about the journey of a few Sudanese “lost boys” that end up coming to America to start a new life.
I’m embarrassed to admit that I knew nothing about the lost boys of the Sudan before watching this very engaging film. In fact, from the description I thought it was about small children but the lost boys are actually grown now and the film chronicles their transition from having almost nothing to coming to America and starting to rebuild their lives.
At times, the documentary is very humorous. It’s almost always poignant. Watching the boys see things for the first time and seeing our world through their eyes is both entertaining and illuminating.
As I said, my kids watched it with me and I think we all finished the film with a profound thankfulness for everything we have in this country. We also all appreciated the opportunities we have here a little bit more.
To me, the film, more than anything, illustrates the power of community and how God has wired all of us to need it in our lives.
I don’t think small children would enjoy this film. It wouldn’t hold their interest. I do recommend it to everyone else though. It was eyeopening on all sorts of levels.
