Nobody wants to be in a “conversation” where one person does all the talking…not even God. Too often, our prayer times are just monologues. We go on and on rattling off our concerns or things we want and then we say “Amen” and walk away. God doesn’t mind us sharing our concerns or needs. In fact, He commands it. He does want a chance to respond though. He wants an opportunity to talk to you while you listen attentively.
How does He do that? Well, primarily through too methods.
1. The Bible
God will speak to you mostly through the Bible. Reading the Bible is essential if you really want to hear from God. It’s even more essential if you’re new to the faith and don’t know God’s voice very well yet. The Bible teaches us about God and it also teaches us about His voice. You learn what He sounds like while reading the Word.
He’ll also speak to you specifically by making certain scriptures “jump off the page” as you read them. You’ll just know that He’s speaking to you as it happens.
2. Silence
God often speaks in a small soft voice in your heart. To hear that, to really hear that, you’ve got to be quiet and sit still and listen. Don’t be afraid to shut your Bible, shut your mouth, and sit silence as you listen for the Lord. The Bible says “Be still and know that I am God.” Just stop whatever you’re doing, focus on God and say to Him, “Father, I’m your child and I want to hear from you, is there anything you want to say to me right now?” Then, wait. Wait upon the Lord.
Sometimes you won’t hear anything and that’s okay. Other times, the Holy Spirit will speak into your heart and you’ll know what you need to do.
DISCLAIMER: God is never going to contradict anything He has said in His Word. Before you start acting on anything you’ve heard that might have major consequences, it’s important to verify that what you have heard lines up with what God has already said in the Bible.
Listen to your heavenly Father today.
“Be still and know that I am God” is one of my favorite Bible verses. It reminds me that He is in control. I just need to come to Him in prayer and enjoy the ride.
