I am a man filled with regrets. I don’t know if I have more regrets than most people my age but I suspect I do.
By that, I don’t mean guilt. I’ve known for years how to handle guilt. I just come to the Lord, repent and ask for forgiveness. He’s always forgiven and cleansed me.
Regret, though, that’s different. Regrets haunt me. All those decisions I made and actions I took that looking back were mistakes. Man, I can certainly beat myself up about those things.
I’m learning, however, that God doesn’t want me to live a life filled with regrets. He wants to set me free from that terrific burden.
I’m beginning to grasp, more and more, that His abundant grace is available to me for my mistakes as well as my sins.
Sometimes, I make mistakes not because I’m selfish, rebellious, or disobedient but just because I’m incomplete. I’m a human being that has finite knowledge and limited understanding and because of that I sometimes often make bad judgements and take steps that I eventually regret.
Jesus came to set me free from the guilt that comes from sin but He also came to set me free from my incompleteness, my flawed self, and my limitedness.
To be free from regrets, I must learn to fully embrace His grace for whatever the cause of my brokenness. I must cling to the fact that His grace is more than enough for my intentional sins…and also my honest mistakes.
Great article Tony, welcome to the mid life bump in the road (some call it a crisis). Looking back on the decisions we have made is a natural part of this period of life and we always tend to beat ourselves up over it. I think having regrets is a sign of being close to God in that we want to do our best for him and regret not doing more in our past. It also motivates me to do more now and learn from the past to be ready for the future. God can still use an old man like me (he did Abraham and Moses). If we look at our overall life, I believe God will say “Well done good and faithful servant”, and at that time, nothing else will matter!
Thanks for your response, Bobby. I agree with you 100% about God using us no matter how old we are and that He looks at the totality of our lives.
I don’t know if I’m going through a mid life thing or not though. I think I’ve been this way for about ten years so if it is a mid life crisis then it’s a long one. :)
Hi Tony
Good blog… I was wondering if my church could use this for our monthly bulletin (with link to the original)
