Sometime it feels like we’re very far from God. The Bible tells us that if we draw closer to Him, He’ll come closer to us.
If we’ll just take one step towards Him, He’ll take a thousand towards us.
But, how do we do that?
I imagine there are a lot of ways to draw close to God but here are the four biggest and most effective steps you can take right now…
1. Read His Words
Reading God’s words, the Bible, will bring you closer to Him in a very profound way.
First, you’re making the effort to learn more about Him, which honors Him greatly. (God always responds to being honored!)
Second, you’re learning more and more about Him and His ways in the process. This builds great strength and fortitude into your spiritual life.
In other words, it helps keep you grounded and empowers you to stay closer to God rather than floundering all over the place.
As you internalize the messages and themes of the Bible, you are, in effect, driving a spiritual anchor into the ground that keeps you from being blown all over the map, and away from Him.
If you don’t know where to start, then consider reading the Gospel of Mark. (You could also read the Psalms and Proverbs.) Once you finish those, just select a good reading plan that will take you all the way through the Bible.

2. Create Some Listening Space
Hearing from God is critical for life in general but it’s also essential for closeness to God. It helps us get close and it also lets us know that we are close.
Sadly, it seems that whenever we interact with Him we seem to be the ones doing all the talking. It’s vitally important that you make space on your calendar to simply listen to the Holy Spirit.
Give God the gift of some silent time before Him.
Ask Him to speak to you and then, shut up and, with pen in hand, just listen.

3. Sing Great Songs
The value of worship is all too often underrated. Worship has such great benefits to our lives.
When you sing great praise songs to or about God, they enumerate the grand qualities of God. They lift our eyes beyond the immediate and bring awareness of Him and His greatness.
Along they way, they teach us about God too. And, as they help us focus, we are invariably drawn closer to Him.
Praising God also prepares our hearts in a very unique way to receive Him. They invite Him into our lives and our specific situations. They usher Him in.
4. Love Others
Every time we love others we are walking in the steps of Christ. We are acting as He acts, and following in His path inevitably starts to free us from countless bonds that would normally keep us from Him.
When Jesus came to earth, His love was so great and had such an huge impact that the waves of it still reverberate today. When we love others, we are riding those waves closer and closer to Him.
As we stop to sacrificially serve others, He is there with us.
Do something right now to draw closer to God.

@tonymccollum You’ve been on a roll lately :). Good stuff. Thanks.
This is one of the best post for me, especially, number 2..I am the world’s worse about talking over people while they’re speaking..(hmmm, maybe, that’s why they avoid me..)..I just realized when I read “create some listening space”, that I am always talking to the Lord, but I never shut up long enough to listen..really listen..so, I tried it today, “Lord, know you what a bladder mouth I am so, I’m gonna stop flappin long enough to hear what you have to say to me”..I was silent for a long time, trying my best not to speak out of turn, with pen in hand as you had suggested..after sometime, I had this wonderful feeling of absolute peace..a peace that I had not felt soo strongly in a long, long time..so, I had to tell you what this post has done for me today and to tell you thank you for sharing..I will be more mindful of silence in the future, that’s for sure..Peace be with you..
correction: sorry..meant “blabber mouth” NOT “bladder mouth”..I am soo embarrassed.
