Four Web Apps Leaders Should Know About

I find myself increasingly using web apps for all sorts of tasks. Some are for new tasks and some replace desktop apps I've been using for years. I thought I'd share my current favorites with you guys.

1.  Picnik:

I’ve been using photoshop forever and it’s like second nature to me but I find myself using picnik more and more for all sorts of things.  It’s especially useful for quick crops and resizing.  It’s a delight to use and it loads so much faster than photoshop ever has.  I installed the plugin for Firefox too which just adds a lot of secret sauce goodness.  Did I mention that it’s free?  Highly recommended.

mindmeister

2. Mindmeister:

I’m a big fan of mind mapping.  I’ve been using mindjet’s mindmanager for years and it has made my sermon prep time vastly more productive.  Mindmeister is an online app that almost makes me want to leave mindmanager behind.  It’s very strong.  I love the interface and the integration with the mindmeister iphone app.  While I’m still working on my sermons in mindmanger, I have found myself making my other maps in mindmeister.  I particularly love the zeitgeist feature on the iphone app that lets me capture ideas that come to me on the go.  Mindmeister isn’t free but it’s a steal compared to other products like it and you can demo a light version for free.

gliffy-logo3. Gliffy:

Gliffy is free and it simply rocks.  It’s sort of like visio but it’s easier to use.  If you need any sort of diagram, this is the app for you.  One cool feature is that it lets you share and work on diagrams with other people.  Again, highly recommended.

lovely-charts4.  Lovely Charts:

I’m sure you can make some great charts with Lovely Charts but what it really does very, very well is org charts.  It creates amazing org charts.  That doesn’t sound like much but if you’ve ever tried to create an org chart in something like word or publisher you know that they never look right.  This app knocks it out of the park.  And, don’t let the cutesy name fool you.  This is one very slick web app.

I’d love to know what you think if you try any of these out so please post a “review” here with your thoughts.  I’d also love to hear about any web apps that you’re using that you think I might be interested in.

  1. I registered for Mindmeister free to check it out. Do you have an affiliate ID? :)

  3. Thanks for posting these, I tried out Lovely Charts yesterday. Digging it! Plan on trying Gliffy later since I have to do some Visio stuff anyway.

  5. Tony,

What MM software are you using now? I am really curious about this and have been kicking around a few and wanted to f/u with you to get an idea what you are using.

    Thanks.

  6. David, I still use Mindjet’s Mindmanager most of the time. I have, however, been playing around with XMind and I think it’s pretty strong. It’s also free which is great. Give that a shot and let me know what you think.

    • Brian, I’m afraid I never made that video. I really need to make some time to do that at some point. Sorry.

  7. I searched for your follow-up screencast off and on for months;ever since purchasing XMIND. Good to know the status, but disappointed. Any idea on a timeframe?
